The Iraq War

The Pentagon began preparing war plans to both invade
and occupy Iraq and the political discussions began in the Cabinet meetings soon after Mr. Bush’s election. Secretary O’Neill, in the book The Price of Loyalty stated that discussions began during the first month of the Bush administration to invade and occupy Iraq.

On February 10, 2006 the Washington Post carried the story of Paul R. Pillar, the retired CIA’s top counterterrorism analyst from 2000 to 2005 who coordinated the intelligence on Iraq from 15 agencies.
Pillar said Bush misused the intelligence and “cherry-picked” the intelligence to justify his decision to invade Iraq. The Washington Post story said Pillar wrote in an upcoming article for the Journal of
Foreign Affairs that “It has become clear that official intelligence was not relied on in making even the most significant national security decisions, which intelligence was misused publicly to justify decisions already made…” These comments by Mr. Pillar
are some of the most severe indictments of the way President Bush misused our intelligence to justify his invasion of Iraq in early 2003.

Mr. Pillar said, “Official intelligence on Iraqi weapons programs was flawed, but even with its flaws, it was not what led to the war”.

Everyday more and more becomes public knowledge about Iraq. The CIA, in response to a request from VP Dick Cheney, undercuts the rational of Bush and Cheney that there was a connection between Saddam Hussein and al-Qaeda. This is a separate conclusion from the 9/11 Commission. Today reports were released that Former
Ambassador L. Paul Bremer acknowledged that we did not have enoughtroops in Iraq and that he told President Bush we needed more troops.

On Monday October 4, 2004 night Ambassador Bremer addressing a group in Sulfur Springs,W. VA said, when he arrived in Iraq May 6, 2003 he found “horrid” lootingand a very unstable situation. “We paid a big price for not stopping itbecause it establishes an atmosphere of lawlessness” “We never had enough
troops on the ground” Bremer said. He also said that he pleaded formore troops with President Bush.
